What is this thing anyways?

There are 3 layers to your Skribblz Art:  The transfer tape is on top and is transluscent so it shows your image through it, the bottom layer is the glossy paper backing, and the design is sandwiched between these two.

Tips for Installing Perfect Vinyl Lettering!

1. PREP YOUR WALLS.

If you have grease, smoke or just day to day residue on your painted walls, your Skribblz Art will not adhere well to the surface. Clean the wall well with a mixture of dish soap and water, and dry thoroughly.

2. PREP THE ARTWORK!

No, don't take shortcuts, prepping your artwork is a necessary piece of the puzzle. After removing your vinyl from the tube, unroll it and allow it to rest. Once it has flattened slightly, flip it face down so that the paper backing is facing you and rub the backing with a credit card, flat plastic tool or the palm of your hand. Try a test of the vinyl, peeling the paper backing away on an angle. The image should stay in place on the transfer tape. If it wants to stay stuck to the rigid backing, replace the paper backing, flip face up and rub again.  Your vinyl should stick to the transfer tape, and not the paper backing.

If you are ready to adhere this to the wall, remove the paper backing and skip to step 6

3. GET IT STRAIGHT!

If you are planning a curly quote, flourish or wavy design, or you are planning to install your text on an angle, this does not apply to you! But for everyone else, the key to a beautiful piece, is to get it straight. This means measure, measure and measure again!

You might think your eye is pretty good at telling you when it looks straight, but even 1/4" discrepancy can ruin the look of your artwork!

Borrow a level or do some creative work with a tape measure, but definitely get it straight!

4. TAPE IT SECURELY. (optional)

Painter's tape is probably best, but masking tape will do. When you have it aligned, tape it to the wall with some nice wide tape. There may be markings on your order, depending on its' complexity, to help you align it on your wall.

5. CUT INTO SECTIONS. (optional)

We don't always recommend this, but if you feel that the size is unmanageable, then carefully cut between the words, up to the tape level. This will allow you to remove the backing in sections.

6. ADHERE THE SKRIBBLZ TO YOUR WALL.

Peel away the ridgid paper backing so that the image is stuck to the transfer tape.  Whether you've taped it in place or you have a couple of friends holding it for you, you now must stick it to the wall. Wait! You must work from the center out...smoothing out bubbles as you go. Be patient, get it right.   Burnish the image with your palm once your have smoothed it on the wall.  Work in a circular fashion and rub the image..the heat from your palm will soften the adhesive slightly and ensure that it grips the wall surface properly.

7. REMOVE THE TRANSFER TAPE.

Once you have burnished the surface of the image, you can now remove the transfer tape. If the letters want to come with the tape, you didn't burnish it enough. Peel away at the 45 degree angle, keeping your hands close to the wall. If you pull it away quickly or with your hands away from the wall, you risk pulling off the entire piece!  If you accidentally tear the vinyl in the process (uncommon but can happen), replace the tape over the torn piece, burnish with your palm and resume removal of the transfer tape.

8. GET OUT THE HAIRDRYER. (optional)

No, leave your hair alone...this is for the Skribblz! If you've gotten any small bubbles under the lettering, use your hairdryer to warm the vinyl. Keep it moving, you don't want it to melt! Those pesky bubbles should just flatten right out!

Tools You Might Need:
  • tape
  • sizzors
  • level
  • tape measure
  • credit card (to act as a squegee)
  • hairdryer

Q:  Can I Apply my Skribblz to Newly Painted Walls?

A:  Paint typically needs to cure for a period of no less than a month, to ensure that it won't peel right off your wall in the event that you remove your Skribblz. Curing makes the paint hard, essentially making sure that the moisture is gone from the painted surface.

Be patient! Just wait to make sure your paint is cured. You don't want to have to re-order your artwork...or worse yet....repaint an entire wall!

Q:  Do I Have to Clean my Wall Before Adhering Skribblz?

A:  Well, the answer is simple......YES. Unless this wall was painted within the last 3 months, you are safest to just bite the bullet, and wash the wall. Washing the surface removes any oil, smoke or residue that could affect the adhesive on your Skribblz. You don't want your artwork peeling off and having to re-order a new piece.

Q:  Can I Cut my Skribblz Apart to Alter the Design?

A:  Many of our customers ask if they can cut their Skribblz. And our answer......of course you can! Often our customers find it easier to install Skribblz if they have cut them apart, and just as often, they want to customize the look of the artwork by placing the cut pieces in their own design. You can trim all of the excess paper off too, in order to make your piece easier to handle.

There's just one thing to keep in mind: Don't cut through the image! Even though the vinyl is thin, if you cut the image you will probably see the mark once it's installed.

Other than that, go nuts....cut away!

Q:  Can I put up my Skribblz in a room that has a higher degree of moisture?

A:  Skribblz can be placed on any flat surface in your home.  However, bathrooms and basements (especially outside walls) can often contain higher moisture amounts which affects the paint adhesion to the wall.  While you can definitely hang your Skribblz in these areas, the paint adhesion may degrade because of the moisture over time, and when you try to remove your artwork, the paint may come with it as well.  It's not a huge deal, but it may requuire some spackle to smooth out the area afterwards.  Remember that Skribblz look especially cool on mirrored surfaces, and if you want to place it on a wall in a high humidity room, when you go to remove it, warm it with your hairdryer first!
